SCROLL DOWN

Urban Land Use

Describe and give reasons for the characteristics of, and changes in, land use in urban areas

In pairs, draw a large, labelled map of a typical city from above. Include typical features you would see in most cities.

URBAN LAND USE MODEL

Land use models are theories which attempt to explain the layout of urban areas. A model is used to simplify complex, real world situations, and make them easier to explain and understand. There are a range of land use models that apply to urban areas in high income countries (HICs).

  1. Research and make notes on each of the urban land use models above

  2. Search Google Earth for one large city of your choice

  3. Find examples of patterns similar to the urban models presented above

  4. Create a document including screenshots from Google Earth highlighting the similarities/differences

URBAN SPRAWL

Urban sprawl is the spread of an urban area into what used to be countryside.

This is closely linked to the concept of urbanisation, where an increasing number of people live in urban areas, contributing to their growth.

CAUSES OF URBAN SPRAWL

  • Economic growth and increasing incomes

  • Development of public transport

  • Cheaper land at the rural-urban fringe

  • Less traffic and air/noise pollution

  • Better road infrastructure that provides access to surrounding settlements and other urban areas

  • A more pleasant and green environment with more open space

  1. Define “urban sprawl” and list the causes in your notes.

  2. Watch the video above and add to your notes.

  3. Explore the growth of Lausanne’s rural-urban fringe (the border of the city and countryside) for 1950 and 2018

  4. Take a selection of screenshots for one area that show the changes and add these to a document.

  5. Write a paragraph describing the changes you observe and explain why, using the causes listed above.
